Stainless Steel IBC Engineering and Manufacturing Standards

Stainless steel intermediate bulk containers are approved according to the standards and requirements of Title 49 CFR Section 178, the FDA, IMDG, ANSI/NSF 61, NFPA 30 Section 9.4.1 (1) and are DOT UN 31A/Y permitted for the handling and transport of non-hazardous and hazardous Packing Group II and III materials, and NFPA class flammables and combustibles. Stainless steel IBC tanks’ engineering and design certifications approves them for freight transport via motor vehicle, rail, air, and sea cargo vessels.

Our stainless steel IBC tanks are built from 304 grade stainless steel with a #320 grit 2B electropolish finish. Tanks are constructed to a 10 gauge thickness, one of the thickest metal gauges available for stainless steels, making them robust, resilient containers. The 2B finish produces a highly polished and smooth surface that promotes cargo fluidity, draining, as well as tank cleaning and sanitizing. Stainless steel IBCs made from 316L grade metal and different finishes are available on request.

Characteristics and Advantages of Stainless Steel IBC Tanks

Stainless steel metals have unique properties and advanced chemical resistance. Elemental chromium within the metal forms a protective chromium oxide film across the container’s surfaces due to the reaction between chromium and atmospheric oxygen during manufacture. Due to this chromium oxide film, stainless steel IBCs require no further surface protection from corrosion. If the surface is damaged, the chromium oxide film can repair itself to a point if oxygen is present.

The stainless steel metal construction provides non-permeation and residue-free characteristics ideal for applications involving high-purity or sensitive materials.

Stainless steel IBC totes can have very long service lives, are highly portable and reusable, are easy to maneuver, fill, load, and discharge, and generally require very little maintenance aside from cleaning and inspection approvals. Successful stainless IBC lifespan can be more than 20 years, even when handling corrosive commodities, making these IBCs ideal as long term, cost effective company assets. At service end, stainless IBCs are recyclable, effectively limiting environmental waste and industry disposal costs.

Stainless Steel IBC Features

IBC tanks are cubical in shape and sized around standard, internationally accepted pallet dimensions. The cubical shape increases their ability to be organized, stacked, transported, and integrated into logistic streams, processing networks, and application systems. Commodities sensitive to environmental effects and purity contamination can safely be stored in stainless steel IBCs without exposure risks during handling, storage, or transport.

Our steel IBCs come standard with a 22 1/2″ removable manway that allows top-in-the-industry access to the tank interior and supported by a bolted clamp ring. The containers feature a 2″ bung, a 2″ Rieke or 3″ fusible automatic pressure relief vent, sloped bottom, 2″ stainless steel ball drain valve, and dual-purpose 1/4″ combination lifting lugs that comply with shackle and over jaw gap standards and that double in stacking alignment and stability.

Each tank is labeled with the IBC product information, UN label, and a unique serial number. The tanks have 3 way forklift and pallet jack access channels to provide multidirectional mobility.
